The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit, The Met Gala, returned this year on May 1, featuring the latest and most extravagant in fashion. Stars appeared at this year’s event dressed in their avant garde ensembles created by top-name designers. This year’s Met Gala exhibition spotlighted designer, Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garcons: Art of The In-Between collection. Rei Kawakubo is the first living designer to be the sole subject of the Met Gala since Yves Saint Laurent in 1938.

Rei Kawakubo is routinely featured in The Most Influential Designers of The 20th Century category. The Costume Institute’s curator Andrew Bolton stated that “by inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.” Writer Vanessa Friedman explained how Kuwakubo “refuses to accept any of the rules that govern normal clothing design: that clothes need to be flattering, for example, or that they need to have armholes. Instead, she is interested in challenging our ideas about what defines beauty, identity and gender.”

The night began as celebrities entered the lavish event revealing designers’ visions of the year through featured couture. Stars such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Solange Knowles, and Zendaya won the night over in their daring garments. Rihanna walked the red carpet bearing none other than Rei Kawakubo, the statement designer of the evening, featuring immense and colorful patterns. Various floral patterns covered the ensemble, creating an avant garde piece.

Katy Perry wowed many with her controversial statement piece. Her outfit featured a long vibrant red wool coat gown with various intricate details, along with a mesh veil and trinkets orbiting her head. John Galliano designed the jaw-dropping piece,  it was from his Maison Margiela Artisanal collection. Many were stunned by this bold choice, as Perry co-chaired the event, therefore many were hoping she would follow the Comme des Garcons Theme.

The bold fashion statements continued as Zendaya and Solange Knowles arrived at the event. Zendaya stepped onto the carpet in a whimsical Dolce & Gabbana dress, featuring an off the shoulder silhouette embossed with a parrot print. Leaving the dress to speak for itself, Zendaya went for a simple makeup look with an orange lip and afro curls.

Setting herself apart from the crowd Solange Knowles redefined the puffer jacket. Taking a risk, Knowles rocked a Tom Brown puffer jacket dress. Though the outfitted remained to be controversial, it acted as an amazing piece for a once a year event.

Finishing off the night with Rei Kawakubo’s runway collection, wining, and dining, The 2017 Met Gala managed to be another successful philanthropic evening for the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute.
