El Gato Staff: 2018-2019
Staff Advisor- Doug Garrett
Editors-in-Chief – Eden Gibson, Erin Grasty, Tatum Jenkins, and Sophie Kroesche
Senior and Editor-in-Chief Eden Gibson’s primary passions include watching conspiracy theory videos on YouTube, giving her cats unrequited affection, moving snails to the shade so they don’t fry in the sun, and consuming alarming quantities of Kraft Mac and Cheese. She also enjoys Marvel movie marathons and creating Spotify playlists solely for the aesthetic. If you can’t reach her, it’s probably because she fell asleep on her couch. You can usually catch her in the El Gato lab (or at Chipotle).
Feel free to call this Editor-in-Chief whatever the heck you want because at this point her list of nicknames includes, but is not limited to, E, G, EG, Grasty, Rin-Rasty, small hands, four eyes, and Ms. Grasty. Senior and self-appointed Media-Guru Erin Grasty enters her third and final year on El Gato’s staff, ready to dish out as many hugs and good conversations as possible. Make sure to give her a shout (preferably using any of the nicknames–except ‘Ms. Grasty’–listed above).
It’s Tatum’s third year of El Gato, and unfortunately, she didn’t get her first choice of position, ending up becoming an Editor-in-Chief. She’s very passionate about these specific things: making playlists, anything with a rainbow on it, and doing a cross-country road trip. Whatever you do, do not talk to her about Season 4, Episode 12 of “Orange is the New Black” or play the song “Love” by Kendrick Lamar or she will spontaneously burst into tears.
After a long run as a Media and News Editor in El Gato, Sophie Kroesche is stoked to spend her senior year as one of the Editors-in-Chief. She enjoys backpacking with her dad, chugging kombucha, and spending her entire paycheck at Whole Foods.
Public Relations Managers – Bradley Adams and Nick Borgia
Senior Bradley Adams is excited for his second year on El Gato’s staff as a Public Relations Manager. You can typically find him at the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club coaching, lifeguarding, or teaching swim lessons. He enjoys photography, adventuring, and hanging out with friends.
Junior Nick Borgia is hitting the ground running as he proudly begins his first year as a part of El Gato’s staff. An aspiring sports journalist, Borgia loves discussing, reading, and writing about sports. He plays Varsity Volleyball for LGHS as an outside hitter. Be sure to look out for him this year at all sorts of different LGHS sporting events!
News Editors – Madeline King, Reegan McCluskey, and Cooper Bowen
Madeline King is a junior at LGHS and a second-year El Gato News Editor. When not drowning in the pool or falling over on the lax field, she enjoys trying weird foods and accidentally falling asleep in inconvenient locations.
Senior and News Editor Reegan McCluskey can always be found with a field hockey stick in hand. McCluskey plays for the LGHS field hockey team and enjoys the competitive nature of sports in general. Besides athletics, she also challenges herself with school courses and extracurriculars. Other than sports and school work, McCluskey loves hanging out with friends and thrift shopping in Santa Cruz or San Francisco.
Cooper Bowen is a sophomore at LGHS and ecstatic to be on El Gato’s staff this year. When he’s not at school or running in cross-country or track, Bowen can be found rewatching The Office or listening to music that none of his friends like. If you happen to spot him, he’ll likely be wearing all grey or black, despite having clothes in a variety of different colors.
National Editor – Andy Braham
This year, senior Andy Braham has set the goal of becoming the worst human being alive in the senior class, particularly when it comes to basic human niceties, like not putting gum under the desk or not eating tuna in class. As a National Editor this year, Andy hopes to address the main question of “Why is Maine a state?”
Editorial Editor – Austin Yung
This is Austin’s second year in El Gato. He is excited to be working as the Editorial Editor for the first time, as he came from the News section last year. In his free time Yung likes to binge watch Netflix shows, resell clothes and sneakers as a side hustle, and cook rice (noodles occasionally).
Opinion Editors – Alex Niles and Gabrielle Pollock
Alex Niles, a senior and owner of one pair of exceptionally shiny canines, will be enjoying his first year as Opinion Editor for El Gato News. In his spare time Alex enjoys keeping up with the Kardashians and jogging at a moderate pace. His favorite food is licking the powder off wasabi peas.
Gabrielle Pollock, a Senior at LGHS, starts her third year on El Gato’s Staff this year, serving as a Opinion Editor. She loves exotic fashion, animals, and pop music. In her free time she enjoys playing lacrosse, riding her horse Hawk, playing piano, and attempting to be dairy and gluten free. You’ll most likely find Gabrielle at the barn or blasting country music in her room. When Gabrielle’s not with her horse, she’s working diligently with her sister and best friend on their company, The AG Sisters. She desperately wants to be a mermaid, but will be plenty satisfied if she ends up living in San Francisco with an abundance of animals and traveling the world.
World Editors – Alaina Fox and Esther Sun
Alaina Fox is a sophomore who’s thrilled to be on El Gato’s staff as a World News editor. Her talents include messing up microwave dinners, dropping her phone on her face, and making puns at inappropriate times.
Sophomore and World Editor, Esther Sun is dreading her second year of high school a little less now that she has El Gato in her school day. She writes poetry in on-and-off bursts of creativity and hopes her article-writing process won’t be quite as volatile. Ask her about her plant that reminds her to stay hydrated.
Center Editor – Jamie Blough
This is Jamie Blough’s second year on El Gato staff as a Center Editor. Already struggling to balance her classes for junior year, she spends most of her time in her room on her laptop, which is the best place to pursue her passion for music through a world of Spotify playlists. Outside of school, you can find her at rehearsals for (insert name of somewhat obscure musical here), at the barn with her horse, or smothering her overweight cat whom she loves with all her heart.
Culture Editors – Madeline Pollock and Wilma Wei
As a second-time Culture Editor, this is senior Madeline Pollock’s third year writing on El Gato’s staff. When Madeline isn’t online shopping, she runs her own company, The AG Sisters, rides her horse, and plays lacrosse. She loves fashion, anything pink, Kate Spade, and Legally Blonde. Madeline is a twin who dreams of traveling to Paris.
Junior Wilma Wei is ecstatic to start her first year on El Gato’s staff as a Culture Editor! She loves fun socks, the environment, and horror movies. If she’s not with her family, she’s either at the beach, watching Parks and Rec, watering her succulents, or playing the ukulele.
Humor Editors – Ethan Sanders and Sami Elizondo
A sophomore at LGHS, Ethan Sanders is a humor editor and newbie on El Gato staff. Some of Sanders’ hobbies include water polo, playing with his two lovely dogs, and mountain biking. On the rare occasion that Sanders is not doing any of the aforementioned things, you can find him replacing the letters in his obscurely named Spotify playlists with numbers and emojis.
Junior Sami Elizondo dives into the school year as a humor editor on El Gato’s Staff. Starting water-polo and swim team her sophomore year without knowing how to swim was probably one of her bolder decisions, but it has given her a new outlet of friends, not to mention a killer tan. Her goals for this year include making the most out of her friendship and academic experiences and improving as a student, friend, and athlete in her community.
People Editors – Ashley Hagar and Delaney Brown
After two chaotic, brownie-filled years of being El Gato’s Culture Editor and Center Editor, senior Ashley Hagar is now one of the resident People Editors for her last year on campus. If you can find this baking fanatic in between her track and field and soccer practices, feel free to request a batch of palmiers, bordeaux cupcakes or a simple batch of chocolate chip cookies; they will most likely appear at your desk the next day.
Delaney Brown, a sophomore at LGHS, is a fifteen-year-old rom-com loving, Harry Potter fanatic who stresses about everything. Some of her hobbies include painting with Bob Ross, annoying her friends with her extensive Harry Potter knowledge, and spending ungodly amounts of time on Youtube.
Sports Editors – Thomas Petroff, Morgan Tinsley, and Nate White
Thomas Petroff is a senior at LGHS and a sports editor for the 2018-2019 school year. This is his third year on staff and second year as a sports editor. Among some of Petroff’s favorite obsessions and hobbies are Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal, listening to J-Cole, and playing dunk hoops on the weekends. He also enjoys mowing the lawn in his spare time.
Morgan Tinsley is a junior at LGHS and a Sports Editor for the 2018-2019 school year. She spends much of her time driving to CVS for snacks, annoying her dog, hanging with friends and getting kicked in the face at concerts. As someone interested in journalism, media, and voicing her opinions, she knew that El Gato would be a great class for her. She looks forward to the rest of her junior year and her first year on El Gato.
Nate White is a senior at Los Gatos High School, and this will be his second year on El Gato staff. He plays football, basketball, and golf for the Wildcats. His favorite TV show is “The Office,” but he also loves “Narcos.”
Graphics Designers – Katherine Monsef, Sami Linden, and Charlotte Brezoczky
Some know her as Keith, Kat, Kerth, or even her real name: Katherine Monsef. She is a woman of clumsiness and unlucky tendencies. This year, she will continue to draw the second-best graphics featured in the paper. Some of her best include upgraded versions of a stick figure or a nice star. Besides long walks on the beach, she enjoys field hockey, lacrosse, and day-to-day battles with natural selection.
Senior Sami Linden is beyond excited to return to the El Gato Graphics team this year. In between intense doodling sessions, she makes the trek to Sunnyvale for her daily attempts at scaling fake rocks. She occasionally finds the time to climb real boulders, but is usually satisfied with fantasizing about them instead. Her other hobbies include listening to the Hamilton soundtrack on repeat and struggling to keep her collection of houseplants alive.
Junior Charlotte Brezoczky is “livin” it up this year. She plays water polo, swims, and dabbles in the arts, all while trying to make time for some Chipotle runs. She loves music, and is always down for some Logic, Post Malone, or Sam Smith. If lost, she can be found on the high school pool deck, at Noah’s bagels, or literally any surface, sleeping or watching Shameless.
Media Production Editors – Quincy Marks, Alis Patterson, Sasha Ryu, Lexi Kupor, and Caroline Wagner
Sophomore Quincy Marks is excited for her first year on El Gato staff working on the media team. Besides rowing, Marks enjoys hanging out with her friends and binge watching The Office.
Alis Patterson, a junior at LGHS, is starting her first year on El Gato’s staff as a part of the media team. You can regularly find her crying in public places, complaining to her friends, and throwing tantrums. She loves gorging on chocolate ice cream and towering over inferior short people. Running out of breath on the stairs is a common occurrence for this future Bachelor contestant.
This is sophomore Sasha Ryu’s first year on the El Gato staff. Perpetually confused by fashion and clothing in general, Ryu only owns three pieces of clothing that aren’t black or white, and never learned the proper way to tie her shoelaces. Although Ryu isn’t of much help when it comes to outfit decisions, you can always count on her to make you a valentine and french braid your hair.
Lexi Kupor is a sophomore at LGHS and is thrilled to be joining El Gato’s staff! When she gets the chance, Lexi enjoys driving her friends crazy with her eclectic country, 80’s, and French music playlists. Her life will be complete once she accomplishes the following: becoming best friends with the cast of Stranger Things, living in Finland and/or rural England, and finishing a Netflix series without abandoning it halfway through.
“Got any games?” El Gato newbie and game enthusiast Caroline Wagner is probably playing Temple Run 2 or Homescapes in between writing articles. The sophomore loves to pass the time doing other things such as playing field hockey, making friendship bracelets, and buying chocolate-covered strawberry freezes from Pressed Juicery.
